CM Maryam Nawaz Launches Pakistan’s First Electric Bus Service
Blessed by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on February 19, 2025, Lahore became the proud face of Pakistan’s first fully electric bus service, which is in line with the larger vision of the Punjab government to minimize pollution, enhance public well-being, and provide eco-friendly transport solutions to its citizens. At the end of Electric Bus Service initiation, it would further assert the province’s commitment to counter climate change and modernize urban transit, hence setting the standard of urban mobility for Pakistan.

Free Travel for Students & Affordable Fares for Citizens
Big News! The purpose of the electric bus service is to provide convenience for students and underprivileged people. The Punjab government, under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has made this service completely free for students and deserving individuals so they can travel easily. Additionally, the Punjab government has set a minimal fare of just 20 rupees for other citizens. Through this electric bus service, 17,000 passengers will be able to travel daily.

Route & Operation Details
Initially, the electric bus service will be introduced on the 21 km route, connecting some of the main areas of Lahore:
The electric bus service will connect 42 bus stops all along the route, ensuring accessibility for boarding and alighting. The service shall offer its buses every nine minutes, thus cutting down on waiting times and enhancing transport efficiency.

Future Expansion Plans
CM Maryam Nawaz revealed the ambitious plans for extending the electric bus service to the entire Punjab. By August 2025, an additional 500 electric buses will be introduced, and the service within Faisalabad and Gujranwala shall be added thereafter. The government is also evaluating to assemble electric buses in Faisalabad and has requested the Chinese companies invest in the sector.

Further, the Punjab government plans to provide solar-powered fans and water coolers to bus stations, enhance security through Safe City cameras, and improve private public partnership for developing electric charging infrastructures.

Speaking at the opening of the City Service, Maryam Nawaz CM stated that the sustainability of transport is of utmost importance in addressing environmental problems.
